Folar de Páscoa (Portuguese Easter Bread) Recipe

Let’s make a Folar da Páscoa (Portuguese Easter Bread) Recipe?

This year I feel that nobody feels like celebrating Easter. People are unmotivated, downcast, and above all sad.

This is normal. Before you know it, a serious infectious disease appears, leaving you confined at home and not knowing how to react.

Who would have thought that this would ever happen to us?

It is not easy, but we will get through it!

I’m a big believer that after a storm, comes a rainbow, as they say. And I think we’re going to get through all of this and we’re going to be stronger.

After all, we are giving much more value to relationships, small gestures, hugs, family, and to friends…

And by this, I mean that we are almost at Easter, which is a happy time.

It’s time to be reunited with the ones we love the most, to eat together, to spend quality time, and to be in harmony.

And that can happen even if we are at home!

How about reinventing our Passover?

It’s times like these when we have to be strong. We have to have the power to take the good things and amplify them.

Do you miss the lamb and the full table? Or that Folar da Páscoa (Portuguese Easter Bread) Recipe that is a family secret?

Then hold on to that and get together. Use the technologies for that. Who doesn’t have WhatsApp, facetime, or zoom?

Or some other app like that?

Fill the house with the good smell of Easter, paint the eggs and eat the chocolate rabbits.

Today I bring you Folar da Páscoa (Portuguese Easter Bread) Recipe because it is a typical sweet of this time of year.

It’s a different one, with healthier alternatives, but with all the flavor of a Folar da Páscoa.

And with a plus, those who like cardamom will like this version. I replaced the traditional lemon grass with it.

How do you make this Folar de Páscoa (Portuguese Sweet Bread) Recipe?

The big trick is to whisk the liquid ingredients well and mix the solid ingredients separately, adding them later.

Always choose quality ingredients, especially the flour.

It is important to use warm water, to activate the yeast. But beware, it can’t be very hot water, it has to be lukewarm.

Only open the cardamom seeds when you put them in the dough, and the flavor and aroma will be more intense.

Let the dough rise for 2 hours or until it doubles in size. Otherwise, the consistency of the bread will not be the same.

Finally, add hard-boiled eggs because eggs in Easter bread really give it that Easter feeling.

But the biggest secret? Enjoy every bite of this Portuguese Easter Bread!

  • ½ orange zest

Instructions

  • Start by placing the whole wheat flour, spelt flour, salt, and dry baker's yeast in a large bowl and mix all the ingredients together until you get a smooth mixture. Set aside.

  • Add the dry ingredient mixture to the bowl of liquids and mix lightly.
  • Add the warm water and mix well.
  • Add the cardamom seeds and the lemon and orange zest and knead well until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • If the bowl is large, knead the dough vigorously for about 7 to 8 min.
  • If the bowl is not very large, sprinkle a smooth surface with flour and place the dough on the surface. Knead it well for about 7 to 8 minutes. Put the kneaded dough back into the bowl.

  • Beat an egg and brush it over the dough.
  • Bake for approximately 30 min or until the dough is cooked.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool before serving.

Notes

Replace the flours used with the flours you like best. You can use only one type of flour if you wish.
Add sweet herbs if you like. I didn't have any and since it wasn't easy to find in the supermarket, I put in cardamom and it turned out great.
For a sweeter touch, you can add the juice of an orange.
Two or three days after you make this Portuguese easter bread, it will start to dry out. Put it in the toaster and eat it with some butter. It's wonderful!
