Vegetarian Jackfruit Tacos

Vegetarian Jackfruit Tacos, what is that?

Yeah, that’s probably exactly what you’re wondering… But what the heck did this one invent?

The jackfruit is a tropical fruit well-known in South America and Asia and is very versatile.

As you have already noticed, it serves not only to make sweet recipes, like many other fruits; but especially savory recipes.

Due to its meat-like consistency when shredded, it’s a great ingredient for making vegetarian recipes, using exactly the same methods and seasonings as meat recipes.

You should note that there are several types of jackfruit, and the sweet jackfruit is not suitable for this type of recipe because it obviously will make the final result taste sweet.

But I’m sure you’ll find that information in the package.

If you get fresh jackfruit, use it still green.

Just out of curiosity, did you know that it is possible to make brandy out of jackfruit? That’s right…

Well, just to give you some context, I met this fruit in my travels through Asia and since then I have seen many foreign blogs talking about it.

I confess that one of the things that fascinated me the most about this fruit was the fact that it can be used to make salty foods that look divine.

And of course, these jackfruit vegetarian tacos were the result of a thousand and one recipes I’ve been seeing around (in many places, believe me!).

As I love tacos, I found it super interesting to make them with jackfruit and I’ve been wanting to make this wonderful recipe for vegetarian jackfruit tacos for a long time.

Start by thinly slicing the onion and mincing the garlic.

I know it’s not very easy to find jackfruit in Portugal, or at least I never find it where I shop…

But I finally found it at Aldi and thought: IT’S NOW!

It was stronger than me, I needed to try it!

And you know what? They were divine!

So good, my dad even asked what meat I used.

And that’s it, they were done in a flash, and people back home were asking for more…

I think I’ll have to make them again! ahah

I actually cheated a bit…I didn’t make the tortillas.

Sometimes you have to be practical and this was the case, but maybe next time I’ll decide to make them from scratch.

But the real secret is really in putting flavors together.

  • Cumin
  • Paprika
  • Turmeric

Prep time:10 minutes
Cook Time:30 minutes
Total time:40 minutes
Keywords: jackfruit, vegetarian, vegetarian food, Vegetarian Jackfruit Tacos, vegetarian tacos
Portions: 4 tacos

Ingredients

  • 1 can preserved jackfruit
  • 4 tortillas
  • Olive oil to taste
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 chopped garlic cloves
  • 4 limes
  • 1 tsp cumins
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 3 tbsp English sauce
  • 1 red chili pepper
  • 1 handful coriander
  • 1 handful mint
  • 2 diced mangoes
  • 1 handful lamb's lettuce

Instructions

For the mango

  • Start by cutting the mango into cubes.
  • Chop the mint and half the coriander and add to the mango.
  • Slice the red chili pepper into rounds, remove the seeds, and add the red pepper pieces to the mango mixture.
  • Squeeze the juice from two limes and mix well.
  • Let the mango marinate until used.

For the sauce

  • In a blender, put ½ cup of olive oil (or a good amount to make the sauce).
  • Add the remaining coriander and blend well until you get a homogeneous mixture.
  • Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

For the tacos

  • Start by preparing the jackfruit. Take it out of the packaging and cut it into thin slices. Set aside.
  • Thinly slice the onion and mince the garlic.
  • Put a dash of olive oil in a frying pan and saute the onion and garlic.
  • Add the jackfruit and cook for one to two minutes.
  • Add the cumin, paprika, turmeric, salt, and pepper, and mix well.
  • As soon as the jackfruit softens, add the tomato sauce and let it simmer, stirring constantly.
  • Add the English sauce and continue stirring for 2 min.

Assembling the tacos

  • Heat the tortillas in a very hot frying pan until toasted.
  • Put some lamb's lettuce on each tortilla.
  • On top, place a good portion of the jackfruit mixture.
  • Add the marinated mango and fold in your jackfruit veggie tacos.
  • Finally, drizzle some of the olive oil and coriander sauce and a few drops of lime.
  • Serve with lime slices and if you want to upgrade this experience, drink a Corona Extra.

Notes

For the sauce, add the herbs you like best. I do it with coriander because I love it and I think it's a great combination.
You don't need to use the red chili pepper. However, if you remove the seeds well, it doesn't become spicy.
In case you don't want to use mango, avocado is a great alternative. The mango just gives it a fresher touch.
You can replace the lamb's lettuce with leafy greens of your choice, or you can skip it altogether. It just gives the tacos more freshness.
This recipe can be made with minced meat, but for the vegetarian version, jackfruit is an excellent choice.
